Michael L. LeFevre, professor of future of family medicine and vice chair of the department of family and community medicine at University of Missouri Health Care, was among 65 new members and five foreign associates who were named to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) last month.
Election to the Institute is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine,” IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg said in a media release. “Each of them stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine, and their achievements are an inspiration.”
The new members were announced Oct. 17 in conjunction with the Institute’s 41st annual meeting.
New members are elected by current active members through a highly selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancements of medical sciences, health care and public health. The newly elected members raise IOM’s total active membership to 1,688 and the number of foreign associates to 102.
The Institute of Medicine was established in 1970 as the health branch of the National Academy of Sciences, and has become recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues. The National Academies is the umbrella organization for the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences.
The most recent election of LeFerve to the Institute of Medicine brings the number of MU faculty in National Academies to seven. They include LeFerve and the following:
- Jim Birchler, curators’ professor of biological sciences; National Academy of Sciences
- Jack Colwill, professor emeritus of family and community medicine; Institute of Medicine
- M. Fredrick Hawthorne, professor of radiology in the nano-medicine center; National Academy of Sciences
- Gerald Perkoff, curators’ professor emeritus of family and community medicine; Institute of Medicine
- Linda Randall, professor of biochemistry; National Academy of Sciences
- R. Michael Roberts, curators’ professor of animal science and biochemistry; National Academy of Sciences
