Going without a car at MU is a lot easier this semester, thanks to a new program that lets students, faculty and staff rent vehicles online for up to 24 hours.
WeCar is aimed at people who do not drive to campus, but who may need a car for a quick trip or to run an errand. The service can also reduce the number of vehicles on the road, helping to ease traffic congestion on campus while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“I’m excited to see our campus community start using this,” said Michelle Froese, public relations manager for Student Auxillary Services. “It is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint and also be convenient.”
Unlike most car-rental services, WeCar is available to drivers as young as 18. Students under 21 must provide their own primary liability coverage of at least $300,000 and submit a consent form signed by a parent or guardian and proof of insurance.
MU’s WeCar program has two hybrid vehicles and two sedans. Sedans cost $8 an hour or $56 a day, while hybrids rent for $9 an hour or $63 a day. Weekend rates are also available. Users can register and reserve a vehicle online at missouristudentunions.com. The service usually requires a one-time, $20 application fee and a $50 annual membership fee. However, a current promotion waives the application fee, and the membership fee has been reduced to $35.
