Veterans, this event is for you — a way for the Univeristy of Missouri to say thank you.
The Patriot Day Barbecue is 5:30–7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 on the north end of Francis Quadrangle. Veterans who are MU students, staff and faculty and their immediate families are welcome to attend the free event.
Beneath a tent will be a barbecue churning out hamburgers and hot dogs. Desserts and beverages will also be offered.
The Residence on Francis Quadrangle will host events in its courtyard, such as the Raptor Rehabilitation Project, which rehabilitates injured birds of prey living at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
On site will be a great-horned owl, American kestrel, red-tailed hawk and barred owl. “Guests can get an up close and personal look while being educated on the animals,” said Ashley Hayes, a special events assistant with University Events.
On the residence’s front lawn will be information on the Veterans and Shelter Dogs Initiative, which facilitates shelter animal adoptions. Studies show that the company of dogs helps many veterans adjust to civilian life by reducing stress.
Children can be entertained by Truman the Tiger and learn about the firefighting profession from Columbia Fire Department personnel. A fire truck will be on site.
